Cline Center for Advanced Social Research at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The Cline Center for Advanced Social Research uses advanced computational techniques to equip researchers and decision-makers with the data and tools they need for addressing key threats to human flourishing. The Cline Center supports transformative research with real-world impact by extracting structured data and insights out of millions of news stories from around the world and by building software for extreme scale text analysis. We train student researchers in conducting data science research for the global good, and empower public and private sector decision-makers to apply this research in ways that promote societal well-being. A core focus of Cline Center innovation is documenting the origins and dynamics of violent and non-violent conflicts.

Cline Center for Advanced Social Research at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in GReVD

Despite recent improvements in efforts to document violent deaths around the world, existing data resources provide a fragmented and partial picture that varies considerably in quality across countries. The Cline Center supports the GReVD consortium through developing and assessing strategies that use Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing methods to efficiently and accurately identify violent deaths reported in news coverage on a global scale.
